Are you considering introducing your child to mouthwash? If so, you’re on the right track toward helping your child have a top-notch smile and oral health! Now, there are certain things you should know about children’s mouthwash before you introduce it, and our dentist, Dr. Greg Weeder, is happy to tell you all about them.
First, you should not introduce your child to mouthwash if they are under 6 years old. This is because children who are younger than 6 tend to swallow the wash, which can make them sick to their stomach. Also, young chompers cannot handle the amount of fluoride provided in the wash. This is because too much fluoride can cause a dental problem called fluorosis. So, just make sure your child is older than 6 years old when introducing the mouthwash.
Second, when your child uses mouthwash, make sure to supervise. Encourage them to avoid drinking the mouthwash and make sure they rinse for the correct amount of time. The recommended time will be listed on the label. You can also make rinsing a game if you would like to. This could make oral hygiene more fun for your child.
Third, because mouthwash isn’t always necessary, it’s best to talk to Dr. Greg Weeder about if your child needs the mouthwash in their oral hygiene routine.
