We are pleased to offer comprehensive pediatric dental services, including general anesthesia and hospital dental treatment. When your child needs dental care, we will typically provide the service they need at our modern office with limited anesthesia. For some patients and some dental cases, however, general anesthesia or treatment at the hospital may be necessary.
General Anesthesia
General anesthesia allows your child to sleep during the dental procedure, so that they will experience no pain and have no recollection of the procedure. This technique is not necessary for the majority of our patients; we only recommend general anesthesia when the situation warrants and other methods are not practical. If your child experiences extreme dental phobia or has a health condition that causes them to be uncooperative or move erratically, we may recommend general anesthesia. It is also sometimes necessary when traumatic procedures are performed. Because general anesthesia carries the risk of adverse effects, we will thoroughly review these with you before treatment.
Hospital Dentistry
While our office is well-suited for most of your child’s dental care needs, there may come a time when your child needs extensive care and treatment. Dr. Greg Weeder is trained in hospital dentistry, which can treat complex dental cases and is performed at a hospital or surgical center and general anesthesia is administered by an anesthesiologist at the facility.
Hospital dentistry is performed when your child needs extensive dental work, which may be caused by trauma or injury to the face or extensive decay and damage. For example, a child may require hospital dentistry when they suffer from serious dental damage as a result of “baby bottle syndrome.” Baby bottle syndrome involves dental decay as a result of a child sleeping overnight immediately after consuming juice or milk.
